This last year and half have been filled with uncertainty whether you are a company owner or an employee working for someone else. During March 2020, most workers received an email from Human Resources saying, “the office is closing down, we will be working from home for the next two weeks.?As many of you know, that two weeks turned into more than a year of remote work. Now, with covid vaccines readily available and the spread under control, companies are trying to figure out what to do with employees or how to tell them to come back to the office.
Of course, there are some industries and jobs that can not be done from home like delivery drivers or machinists, but for jobs like sales and marketing, what is the future of those positions?
According to Gartner’s research, 82% of company leaders intend to permit remote working some of the time as employees return to the workplace. Of that 82% of company leaders, 47% said they are allowing employees to work remotely full time going forward.  This more hybrid and more remote workforce brings new challenges, specifically, determining the structure by which people will work together to get their jobs done.
f88 c ??Lin k?t ??ng nh?p
Some companies that are welcoming back employees are instituting a wide variety of safety measures including: limited face-to-face meetings, providing protective equipment, creating physical distance in the workplace, and staggering when employees are in the office. Some major organizations like Twitter, Square, Facebook, and Shopify were the first to announce permanent work from home plans.
The upside of allowing employees a hybrid/fully remote work experience is the reduction in cost associated with smaller offices, or no office at all. If you do have an office, less supplies will be used.  And for employees, many commuters have saved at least $5,000 a year by working from home and avoiding commuting according to Business Insider.
The downside of requiring employees to come back to the workplace is the associated risk of losing much in demand workers. Thirty-nine percent of employees have said they’d consider quitting if their bosses weren’t flexible about them working from home, according to Business Insider. About 49% of those respondents were millennials and Gen Z workers, showing that remote work is going to be required in the future as the Baby Boomers and Generation Xers slowly start to retire.
Many employees are actually quitting the remote jobs they took during the pandemic in 2020 when told they now need to be in person at the office, according to Bloomberg Wealth. Forbes has stated that some of these remote employees have struggled with the isolation and loneliness if they lived alone or that many don’t have a work-from-home arrangements that are ideal.
While many companies are opting for a hybrid/fully remote option, there are some jobs which cannot be done remotely. It seems like having options for everyone is optimal. Whether it’s in person, hybrid, or fully remote, employees?value being given a choice. Here at Admiral, we are currently allowing many in our office to take a hybrid approach since we are able to function and communicate well whether in the office or outside the office.

What is 3-D printing and how does it work?
3D printing is a process of manufacturing a 3-dimensional solid object from a digital file using a printer specifically designed for this purpose. The printer will lay down successive layers of material from the bottom up until the object is fully created.

In the metals industry, we are used to subtractive manufacturing, milling out parts of your materials; 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process. Printing this way allows you to produce a complex shape with a limited amount of waste created, unlike subtractive manufacturing.
According to Acumen Research and Consulting, the global 3D printing market is forecasted to reach $41 billion by 2026.
Even if 3D printing won’t work for you on a large scale, it could help you create a rapid prototype. Rapid prototyping is the process of designing and manufacturing a single copy from a 3D printer to test and verify that the product works for your needs.
Can you use metal products with a 3D printer?
Yes, metals like stainless steel, chrome, aluminum, nickel alloy, titanium, and some steels work in 3D printing. The process is a bit different when using metals vs. other materials, however. Since additive manufacturing forms parts in such a different way, 3D printing works well when producing certain types of parts that require complex features. The process uses no tooling, is almost fully automated, and adds rather than removes material to allow for more optimized geometries, according to Markforged. With a metal 3D printer, a laser beam melts layers of metal powder. This makes metal 3D printing a great fit for parts that might be traditionally very difficult or expensive to manufacture, including legacy parts, line automation tools, and functional cast prototypes.
What is the benefit of?
The benefits of 3D printing your parts are cost savings by limiting the amount of material waste, and time saving. 3D printers can run all night and all day if programmed in advance and left with enough material. This allows low or mid-volume production runs when there are limited funds for prototyping, or if you are a small business, is perfect when you need something less than a full mill run.

f88 c ??Lin k?t ??ng nh?p
The basic answer is that non-ferrous metals do not contain iron while ferrous metals do contain iron. The more complex answer is that ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals have their own chemical make-up and mechanical properties that put them in either the ferrous or non-ferrous category.

So, you may be asking which metals are non-ferrous?

Aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper are non-ferrous metals along with precious metals like gold, silver, and titanium. These metals contain no iron which allows them to have a resistance to rust. One main feature of these metals compared to the ferrous metals is that they are highly malleable.
You can typically see these metals in uses for outdoor signs, gutters, electronics, house siding, and so many more applications. Most of these are light weight metals that are easy to bend, cut, and machine.

And which are ferrous?

Most ferrous materials are in the steel or iron family. They have high durability and tensile. Ferrous metals have many uses in the construction industry. Ferrous metals are used for both architectural and industrial fabrication. Many builders choose to use them for framing a building, piping, vehicles, train tracks, and many more commercial uses.
You may notice when a new building is being built that they are using iron beams that are already rusted. The reason for this is that ferrous metals have a lot of carbon which makes it easier for them to rust when they are exposed to moisture. Granted there are some exceptions to ferrous metals which don’t rust, like stainless steel. Stainless has a chemical makeup with includes chromium, molybdenum, and nickel that aids in helping it not to rust. Another trait of most ferrous metals is that they are magnetic.

What is Admiral able to provide?

At Admiral, we are primarily non-ferrous metals but have recently introduced some ferrous metals to our metal family. We have carried stainless steel but in 2019, we added steel to our line-up since there are so many uses our customers have for different alloys of steel. In the non-ferrous category we carry aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper.

The greater the demand, the more metals that are being put back into the economy in the form of buildings, tech, infrastructure, etc., resulting in more manufacturing (and sales) in the future. “Prices for copper have risen to their highest level in almost eight years,?The Wall Street Journal reports. “Other raw materials, such as aluminum and zinc, have added roughly 15 percent since the end of September and 40 percent or more since mid-May.”?/p>

One other key factor of metal prices rising is increased interest from investors. Throughout the pandemic, investors kept their money in safer markets. Now, with pandemic closer to being in the rear-view mirror, they are looking to invest in industrial metals. Metal is the key to making everything, from electric cars to homes to the device you are using to view this blog. As The Wall Street Journal Reports, “Investors are piling into wagers on industrial metals like copper and nickel, betting that the coronavirus vaccines and stimulus programs will drive a boom in manufacturing activity as part of a global economic resurgence.?Here at Admiral, many industries we serve took a hit in 2020. Now, we are seeing our customers gaining jobs and placing orders equal to the pre-pandemic level, if not higher. We remain optimistic about the prospects for the coming year.

Admiral Metals has reached yet another milestone. We are 70 years and growing! Admiral metals would not be able to achieve this milestone without our hardworking, dedicated employees or motivated customers. We want to thank you for making this achievement possible.

Admiral was founded in 1950 by the Burstein family and built on the foundation that our customers, too, are our family. We strive daily to provide the highest quality products and the best customer experience possible to each and every one of you. That philosophy has been the cornerstone of the way in which Admiral Metals has operated for 70 years and it is the driving force that will lead us into the future.

Our Story:

Admiral Metals was founded by the Burstein family in 1950 led by Mac Burstein. Fresh out of the Navy, he joined his older brothers who had owned a successful scrap metal company, M. Burstein & Co. Admiral Metals was a natural outgrowth, originally built on the solid relationships the Burstein family had established with area mills and longstanding customers. Over time, Admiral expanded its product lines, service offerings, geographic coverage, and the markets we serve. But what has remained constant over 70 years is the company’s focus on its customers, employees, and mill relationships.

f88 c ??Lin k?t ??ng nh?p

Our Future:

Admiral Metals is still a family-owned private company with Mac’s son, Jim Burstein, being the current President. Since he started, Jim had an eye on the future, introducing innovations that have positioned Admiral as a best-in-class service center. For over 70 years, Admiral has grown its footprint to meet the demand for its products, adding additional locations; the most recent in Largo, Florida in 2018. The company has added multiple product lines, additional trucks to the fleet, employees to its roster, and countless new pieces of equipment.   As we look back on 70 years, we would like to take this moment to thank each and every one of our customers and employees for helping us reach this milestone. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for us and for you!

As of last Friday, new trade policies went into effect concerning imported Aluminum and Steel. Here is the latest information on these metal tariffs.
f88 c ??Lin k?t ??ng nh?pSome basics:
What it is:
A Tariff is a duty, (tax) imposed by a government on imported goods. Generally, tariffs are a percentage of the transaction price that a domestic buyer pays a foreign seller.
Currently, metals affected by the tariff include:
10{41f8e085fc68038a2da2699f98ad8aea8b7e87e25f742017f6f76a0b55118d3c} Tariff on all aluminum imports
25{41f8e085fc68038a2da2699f98ad8aea8b7e87e25f742017f6f76a0b55118d3c} Tariff on all steel imports ?this includes stainless steel
This tariff applies to material received into the USA after March 22 and as of June 1, from all foreign countries. Prior to June 1, U.S. allies Canada, Mexico and the European Union were exempt from these tariffs.
The rational:
China’s state subsidy of steel and aluminum promotes production, flooding the global market, depressing prices and leaving American steel and aluminum companies at a competitive disadvantage. The US Commerce Department has deemed that this poses a national security threat giving the President the authority to restrict imports and impose unlimited tariffs.
Not to be confused with DFARS
We are often asked if all DFARS-compliant countries are exempt from the tariffs. As of June 1, none of the DFARS-compliant countries are exempt.
DFARS-Compliant Countries include:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and Northern Ireland
Effect on supply
If tariffs are extended for a longer period of time as anticipated, the domestic mills will extend their lead times as more business is shifted their way. We recommend that our customers plan for longer lead times as the supply chains within the United States adjust to the increased demand given the anticipated reduction of foreign imports. Some mills products will get substituted given their availability and tariff related costs. Other products may experience temporary shortages. Longer term all of our products will still be available, but maybe from different sources.
Effect on pricing
Domestic mills will most likely follow higher market price levels up, as higher market prices are part of the design of tariffs. One reason they are in place is to level the playing field on the cost of products being dumped from other countries. At this time, due to market fluctuations, we will continue to quote current market price.
At Admiral, we understand your concerns about the price and availability of aluminum and stainless steel that the recent tariff-related announcements have caused. Our longstanding relationships with both domestic and international metal suppliers and the new relationships we are forging mean that we will continue to deliver the highest-grade metals as fast as possible at the very best market price available.
How can we best partner with you during this transitional time? Call or email us or your sales representative so we can discuss your specific needs.
